Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

  1. Support engine.
  2. Remove:
    • Engine cover.
    • Auxiliary drive belt(s).
    • PAS pump pulley.
    • Guide pulley.
    • Tensioner pulley.
    • RH engine mounting bracket [1] .
    • Crankshaft bolt [2] .
    • Crankshaft pulley [3] .
    • Timing belt upper cover [4] .
    • Timing belt lower cover [5] .
  3. Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [6] & [7] .
  4. Remove:
    • Automatic tensioner unit bolts [8] .
    • Automatic tensioner unit [9] .
    • Timing belt.

    NOTE: Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused.

Installation

  1. Check tensioner body for leakage or damage [9] .
  2. Compress pushrod into tensioner body.
  3. Retain pushrod with suitable pin through hole in tensioner body [10] .
  4. Install automatic tensioner unit [9] . Tighten bolts to 20-27 Nm [8] .
  5. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
  6. Remove pin from tensioner body to release pushrod [10] .
  7. Turn crankshaft slowly 2 turns clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder.
  8. Ensure timing marks aligned [6] & [7] .
  9. After 5 minutes check extended length of pushrod is 3,8-4,5 mm [11] .
  10. If not: Repeat installation procedure.
  11. Install components in reverse order of removal.
  12. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [2] . Tightening torque: 180-190 Nm.
