Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

  1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
  2. Remove:
    • Engine cover.
    • RH front wheel.
    • RH inner wing access panel.
  3. Turn crankshaft clockwise to setting position.
  4. Ensure crankshaft pulley timing marks aligned [1] .
  5. Remove:
    • Auxiliary drive belt(s).
    • Auxiliary drive belt tensioner.
  6. Support engine.
  7. Remove:
    • RH engine mounting intermediate bracket bolts [2] .
    • RH engine mounting intermediate bracket nuts [3] .
    • RH engine mounting intermediate bracket [4] .
    • PAS pump.
    • Timing belt upper cover [5] .
    • Crankshaft pulley bolt [6] .
    • Crankshaft pulley [7] .
    • Auxiliary drive belt guide pulley.
    • Timing belt lower cover [8] .
    • RH engine mounting bracket bolts [9] & [10] .
    • RH engine mounting bracket [11] .
  8. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets aligned [12] . If not: Turn crankshaft one turn clockwise.
  9. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [13] .
  10. Remove:
    • Automatic tensioner unit bolts [14] .
    • Automatic tensioner unit [15] .
    • Timing belt.

    NOTE: Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused.

Installation

  1. Check tensioner body for leakage or damage [15] .
  2. Compress pushrod into tensioner body.
  3. Retain pushrod with suitable pin through hole in tensioner body [16] .
  4. Install automatic tensioner unit [15] . Tighten bolts to 20-27 Nm [14] .
  5. Ensure timing marks aligned [12] & [13] .
  6. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
  7. Remove pin from tensioner body.
  8. Turn crankshaft slowly 2 turns clockwise.
  9. Ensure timing marks aligned [12] & [13] .
  10. After 5 minutes check extended length of pushrod is 7-9 mm [17] .
  11. If not: Repeat installation procedure.
  12. Install components in reverse order of removal.
  13. Tighten auxiliary drive belt guide pulley bolt. Tightening torque: 35-55 Nm.
  14. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [6] . Tightening torque: 180-190 Nm.
  15. Tighten RH engine mounting bracket bolts [9] . Tightening torque: 60-70 Nm.
  16. Tighten RH engine mounting bracket bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 15-22 Nm.
  17. Tighten RH engine mounting intermediate bracket nuts and bolts [2] & [3] . Tightening torque: 60-80 Nm.
