How to Replace timing belt on Ford Focus 1.6 Ti-VCT 2011

Special tools

  • Camshaft sprockets locking tool – Ford No.303-1097.
  • Crankshaft timing pin – Ford No.303-748.
  • Flywheel locking tools – Ford No.303-393A/02.
  • Tensioner pulley locking pin – Ford No.303-1054.

Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

WARNING: Crankshaft sprocket NOT keyed to crankshaft.

  1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
  2. Remove:
    • RH front wheel.
    • Auxiliary drive belt cover.
    • Auxiliary drive belt(s).
    • NOTE: Auxiliary drive belt(s) require cutting and cannot be reused.
  3. Remove:
    • Alternator.
    • Starter motor.
    • Coolant expansion tank. DO NOT disconnect hoses.
    • Water pump pulley [1].
  4. Support engine.
  5. Remove:
    • RH engine mounting and bracket.
    • NOTE: Mark position of engine mounting before removal.
    • Timing belt upper cover [2].
    • Blanking plug from cylinder block [3].
  6. Turn crankshaft clockwise until just before TDC on No.1 cylinder.
  7. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets at 11 o’clock position.
  8. Insert crankshaft timing pin [4]. Tool No.303-748.
  9. Turn crankshaft slowly clockwise until it stops against timing pin.
  10. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets at 12 o’clock position [5].
  11. Install flywheel locking tools in starter motor aperture [6]. Tool No.303-393A/02.
  12. Remove:
    • Crankshaft pulley bolt [7].
    • Crankshaft pulley [8].
    • Timing belt lower cover [9].
  13. Fit camshaft sprockets locking tool [10]. Tool No.303-1097.
  14. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets aligned with outer edges of locking tool [11] & [12].
    NOTE: Exhaust camshaft sprocket has a scribed timing mark and inlet camshaft sprocket has a dot timing mark.
  15. Push on belt to depress tensioner pulley and insert locking pin [13]. Tool No.303-1054.
  16. Remove timing belt.

Installation

WARNING: Crankshaft sprocket NOT keyed to crankshaft.

  1. Ensure camshaft sprockets locking tool fitted correctly [10].
  2. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets aligned with outer edges of locking tool [11] & [12].
    NOTE: Exhaust camshaft sprocket has a scribed timing mark and inlet camshaft sprocket has a dot timing mark.
  3. Ensure crankshaft at TDC on No.1 cylinder.
  4. Ensure crankshaft timing pin located correctly [4].
  5. Ensure flywheel locked with tools [6].
  6. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
  7. Remove tensioner pulley locking pin [13].
  8. Install:
    • Timing belt lower cover [9].
    • Crankshaft pulley [8].
    • New crankshaft pulley bolt [7].
  9. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [7]. Tightening torque: 100 Nm + 90°. Wait 20 seconds. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt a further 15°.
  10. Remove:
    • Camshaft sprockets locking tool [10].
    • Crankshaft timing pin [4].
    • Flywheel locking tools [6].
  11. Turn crankshaft slowly 1 3/4 turns clockwise until just before TDC on No.1 cylinder.
  12. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets at 11 o’clock position.
  13. Fit crankshaft timing pin [4].
  14. Turn crankshaft slowly clockwise until it stops against timing pin.
  15. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets at 12 o’clock position [5].
  16. Fit camshaft sprockets locking tool [10].
  17. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets aligned with outer edges of locking tool [11] & [12].
    NOTE: Exhaust camshaft sprocket has a scribed timing mark and inlet camshaft sprocket has a dot timing mark.
  18. If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures.
  19. Remove:
    • Crankshaft timing pin [4].
    • Camshaft sprockets locking tool [10].
  20. Fit blanking plug [3]. Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
  21. Install components in reverse order of removal.
