Special tools

  • Water pump wrench – No.J-42492.

Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

    1. Disconnect:
      • Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor multi-plug.
      • Air intake hose.
      • Breather hose.
    2. Remove air filter assembly.
    3. Raise and support front of vehicle.
    4. Remove:
      • RH front wheel.
      • RH splash guard.
      • Auxiliary drive belt(s).
      • Crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .
      • Crankshaft pulley [2] .
      • Timing belt upper cover [3] .
      • Timing belt lower cover [4] .
      • PAS pump bolts (if fitted).
    5. Fit crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .
    6. Turn crankshaft clockwise until timing marks aligned [5] & [6] .
    7. Slacken water pump bolts [7] .
    8. Turn water pump anti-clockwise to release tension on belt [8] . Use tool No.J-42492.
    9. Remove:
      • RH engine mounting.
      • RH engine mounting bracket.
      • Timing belt.

Installation

    1. Ensure timing marks aligned [5] & [6] .
    2. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
    3. Fit RH engine mounting bracket.
    4. Fit RH engine mounting.
    5. Turn water pump clockwise [8] until tensioner pointer aligned with notch in tensioner bracket [9] . Use tool No.J-42492.
    6. Tighten water pump bolts [7] .
    7. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until timing marks aligned [5] & [6] .
    8. Slacken water pump bolts [7] .
    9. Turn water pump anti-clockwise [8] until tensioner pointer aligned with pointer on tensioner bracket [10] . Use tool No.J-42492.
    10. Tighten water pump bolts to 10 Nm [7] .
    11. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .
    12. Install components in reverse order of removal.
    13. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [1] . Tightening torque: 95 Nm + 30° + 15°.
