How to Replace timing belt on Range Rover Evoque 2.2 eD4 2012-

Replacement Interval Guide

  • Land Rover recommend:
  • Freelander 2:
  • Replacement every 150,000 miles or 10 years under normal conditions (tensioner pulley & guide pulley must also be replaced).
  • Replacement every 60,000 miles or 4 years under adverse conditions (tensioner pulley & guide pulley must also be replaced).
  • Range Rover Evoque:
  • Replacement every 144,000 miles or 9 years under normal conditions (tensioner pulley & guide pulley must also be replaced).
  • The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.

Check For Engine Damage

CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head.

Special Tools

  • Camshaft sprocket locking tool – Land Rover No.303-1277.
  • Flywheel timing pin – Land Rover No.303-1270.
  • Flywheel locking tool – Land Rover No.303-1272.

Special Precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

How to Replace timing belt on Range Rover Evoque 2.2 eD4 2012-

Removal

  1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
  2. Remove:
      • Turbocharger to air filter hose.
      • Engine top cover.
  3. Support engine.
  4. Remove:
      • RH engine mounting and bracket.
      • Engine undershield.
      • RH front wheel.
      • RH lower splash guard.
      • Auxiliary drive belt.
      • Starter motor.
  5. Disconnect fuel pipes from timing belt upper cover.
  6. Remove grommet from timing belt upper cover.
  7. Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing hole at 7 o’clock position [1] .NOTE: No.1 cylinder nearest to flywheel.
  8. Insert:
      • Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] . Tool No.303-1277.
      • Flywheel timing pin [3] . Tool No.303-1270.
  9. Fit flywheel locking tool [4] . Tool No.303-1272.
  10. Remove:
      • Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
      • Crankshaft pulley [6] .
      • Reluctor [7] .NOTE: Ensure reluctor is not damaged.
      • Timing belt upper cover [8] .
  11. Disconnect crankshaft position (CKP) sensor multi-plug.
  12. Remove:
      • Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
      • Timing belt lower cover [9] .
      • Tensioner pulley bolt [10] .
      • Tensioner pulley.
      • Guide pulley bolt [11] .
      • Guide pulley.
      • Timing belt.

Installation

NOTE: DO NOT refit used belt. Engine must be COLD when installing belt.

  1. Fit new guide pulley. Tighten bolt [11] . Tightening torque:
      • A – Freelander 2: 60 Nm.
      • B – Range Rover Evoque: 47 Nm + 80°.
  2. Ensure flywheel timing pin located correctly [3] .
  3. Ensure flywheel locked with tool [4] .
  4. Ensure camshaft sprocket locking tool located correctly [2] .
  5. Fit timing belt in following order:
      • Camshaft sprocket.
      • Guide pulley.
      • Crankshaft sprocket.
      • Water pump pulley.
      • Tensioner pulley.
  6. Fit new tensioner pulley. Finger tighten bolt [10] .
  7. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
  8. Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer in position as shown [12] . Use Allen key [13] .NOTE: Tensioner pointer to left of notch in baseplate [14] .
  9. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
  10. Install:
      • Reluctor [7] .NOTE: Ensure reluctor is not damaged.
      • Crankshaft pulley [6] .
      • Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Use old bolt.
  11. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: 70 Nm.
  12. Remove:
      • Flywheel timing pin [3] .
      • Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
      • Flywheel locking tool [4] .
  13. Turn crankshaft slowly ten turns clockwise.
  14. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing hole at 7 o’clock position [1] .
  15. Insert:
      • Flywheel timing pin [3] .
      • Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
      • Flywheel locking tool [4] .
  16. If camshaft sprocket locking tool cannot be inserted: Repeat installation procedure.
  17. Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
  18. Hold tensioner pulley. Use Allen key [13] .
  19. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [10] .
  20. Turn tensioner pulley until pointer aligned with notch [15] & [16] .
  21. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
  22. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: 70 Nm.
  23. Remove:
      • Flywheel locking tool [4] .
      • Flywheel timing pin [3] .
      • Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
  24. Turn crankshaft slowly two turns clockwise.
  25. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing hole at 7 o’clock position [1] .
  26. Ensure pointer aligned with notch [15] & [16] .
  27. If not: Repeat installation procedure.
  28. Insert:
      • Flywheel timing pin [3] .
      • Flywheel locking tool [4] .
      • Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
  29. Remove:
      • Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
      • Crankshaft pulley [6] .
      • Reluctor [7] .
  30. Install:
      • Timing belt lower cover [9] .
      • Reluctor [7] .NOTE: Ensure reluctor is not damaged.
      • Crankshaft pulley [6] .
      • Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
  31. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Use new bolt. Tightening torque: 70 Nm + 82°.
  32. Install components in reverse order of removal.
