Replacement Interval Guide
- Land Rover recommend:
- Freelander 2:
- Replacement every 150,000 miles or 10 years under normal conditions (tensioner pulley & guide pulley must also be replaced).
- Replacement every 60,000 miles or 4 years under adverse conditions (tensioner pulley & guide pulley must also be replaced).
- Range Rover Evoque:
- Replacement every 144,000 miles or 9 years under normal conditions (tensioner pulley & guide pulley must also be replaced).
- The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head.

Special Tools
- Camshaft sprocket locking tool – Land Rover No.303-1277.
- Flywheel timing pin – Land Rover No.303-1270.
- Flywheel locking tool – Land Rover No.303-1272.
Special Precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
- Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Observe all tightening torques.
Removal
- Raise and support front of vehicle.
- Remove:
- Turbocharger to air filter hose.
- Engine top cover.
- Support engine.
- Remove:
- RH engine mounting and bracket.
- Engine undershield.
- RH front wheel.
- RH lower splash guard.
- Auxiliary drive belt.
- Starter motor.
- Disconnect fuel pipes from timing belt upper cover.
- Remove grommet from timing belt upper cover.
- Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing hole at 7 o’clock position [1] .NOTE: No.1 cylinder nearest to flywheel.
- Insert:
- Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] . Tool No.303-1277.
- Flywheel timing pin [3] . Tool No.303-1270.
- Fit flywheel locking tool [4] . Tool No.303-1272.
- Remove:
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
- Crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Reluctor [7] .NOTE: Ensure reluctor is not damaged.
- Timing belt upper cover [8] .
- Disconnect crankshaft position (CKP) sensor multi-plug.
- Remove:
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
- Timing belt lower cover [9] .
- Tensioner pulley bolt [10] .
- Tensioner pulley.
- Guide pulley bolt [11] .
- Guide pulley.
- Timing belt.
Installation
NOTE: DO NOT refit used belt. Engine must be COLD when installing belt.
- Fit new guide pulley. Tighten bolt [11] . Tightening torque:
- A – Freelander 2: 60 Nm.
- B – Range Rover Evoque: 47 Nm + 80°.
- Ensure flywheel timing pin located correctly [3] .
- Ensure flywheel locked with tool [4] .
- Ensure camshaft sprocket locking tool located correctly [2] .
- Fit timing belt in following order:
- Camshaft sprocket.
- Guide pulley.
- Crankshaft sprocket.
- Water pump pulley.
- Tensioner pulley.
- Fit new tensioner pulley. Finger tighten bolt [10] .
- Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
- Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer in position as shown [12] . Use Allen key [13] .NOTE: Tensioner pointer to left of notch in baseplate [14] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
- Install:
- Reluctor [7] .NOTE: Ensure reluctor is not damaged.
- Crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Use old bolt.
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: 70 Nm.
- Remove:
- Flywheel timing pin [3] .
- Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
- Flywheel locking tool [4] .
- Turn crankshaft slowly ten turns clockwise.
- Ensure camshaft sprocket timing hole at 7 o’clock position [1] .
- Insert:
- Flywheel timing pin [3] .
- Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
- Flywheel locking tool [4] .
- If camshaft sprocket locking tool cannot be inserted: Repeat installation procedure.
- Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
- Hold tensioner pulley. Use Allen key [13] .
- Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [10] .
- Turn tensioner pulley until pointer aligned with notch [15] & [16] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: 70 Nm.
- Remove:
- Flywheel locking tool [4] .
- Flywheel timing pin [3] .
- Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
- Turn crankshaft slowly two turns clockwise.
- Ensure camshaft sprocket timing hole at 7 o’clock position [1] .
- Ensure pointer aligned with notch [15] & [16] .
- If not: Repeat installation procedure.
- Insert:
- Flywheel timing pin [3] .
- Flywheel locking tool [4] .
- Camshaft sprocket locking tool [2] .
- Remove:
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
- Crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Reluctor [7] .
- Install:
- Timing belt lower cover [9] .
- Reluctor [7] .NOTE: Ensure reluctor is not damaged.
- Crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Use new bolt. Tightening torque: 70 Nm + 82°.
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
