How to Replace timing belt on Renault Twingo 1 1.2 16V 2000-2007

Replacement Interval Guide

  • Renault recommend replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years.
  • 07/2003→:
  • Tensioner pulley must be replaced.
  • The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.

Check For Engine Damage

CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

Repair Times – hrs

Remove & install:
Twingo 1,80
RH: Clio 2,10
LH: Clio/Symbol/Thalia 2,10
Kangoo 2,00

Special Tools

  • Crankshaft timing pin – Renault No.Mot.1054.

Special Precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

  10. Remove blanking plug from cylinder block.
  11. Insert timing pin in flywheel [8] . Tool No.Mot.1054. Rock crankshaft slightly to ensure timing pin located correctly.
  12. Slacken tensioner nut [9] . Move tensioner away from belt. Lightly tighten nut.
  13. Remove timing belt.

Installation

NOTE: Timing belt and tensioner pulley MUST be replaced.

  1. Ensure timing pin inserted [8] .
  2. Ensure lug on tensioner pulley [10] positioned in groove [11] .
  3. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley bolt and washer [1] . Tightening torque: 15 Nm.
  4. Fit timing belt. Ensure marks on belt aligned with marks on sprockets [6] & [7] . Ensure belt is taut on non-tensioned side.
  5. Remove timing pin [8] .
  6. Slacken tensioner nut [9] .
  7. Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer at position [12] . Use 6 mm Allen key [13] .
  8. Tighten tensioner pulley nut [9] . Tightening torque: 24 Nm.
  9. Turn crankshaft six turns clockwise.
  10. Insert timing pin in flywheel [8] . Tool No.Mot.1054. Rock crankshaft slightly to ensure timing pin located correctly.
  11. Ensure timing marks aligned [6] & [7] .
  12. Remove timing pin [8] .
  13. Slacken tensioner pulley nut [9] whilst holding 6 mm Allen key [13] .
  14. Turn tensioner pulley until pointer in centre position [14] . Tighten tensioner pulley nut. Tightening torque: 24 Nm.

NOTE: Ensure tensioner pulley does not touch cylinder head at position shown [15] . If tensioner pulley is touching cylinder head, repeat installation procedure.

  15. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .

NOTE: DO NOT start engine without auxiliary drive belt fitted as damage may occur to crankshaft pulley.

  16. Install components in reverse order of removal.
  17. Twingo: Fit and align RH engine mounting.
