  • Replacement every 100,800 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
  • The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.

Check For Engine Damage

CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

  • Crankshaft timing pin – Renault No.Mot.1489.
  • Camshaft timing pin – Renault No.Mot.1430.
  • Engine support tool – Renault No.Mot.1453 or Mot.1672.
  • Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop: Flywheel locking tool – Renault No.Mot.582.

Special Precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

NOTE: If timing belt has failed, it is possible that the camshaft sprocket key has been damaged which would cause incorrect valve timing.

  1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
  2. Remove:
      • Engine top cover.
      • Bonnet (if necessary).
  3. Twingo II – Remove:
      • Windscreen wiper arms.
      • Scuttle panel.
      • Front bumper.
      • Headlamps.
      • Bonnet shut panel.
  4. Modus II – Remove:
      • Plenum chamber cover.
      • Plenum chamber front panel.
  5. Support engine. Use tool No.Mot.1453 or Mot.1672.
  6. Remove:
      • Engine undershield.
      • Engine lower tie-bar.

    NOTE: Mark position of RH engine mounting before removal.

  7. Remove:
      • RH engine mounting.
      • Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop: Starter motor.
      • RH front wheel.
      • RH wheel arch liner.
      • Modus II: Fuel filter and bracket. DO NOT disconnect pipes.
      • Auxiliary drive belt.

        NOTE: Auxiliary drive belt(s), tensioner pulley and guide pulley(s) MUST be replaced.

      • Timing belt upper cover [1] .
      • Camshaft position (CMP) sensor [2] .
      • Timing belt lower cover [3] .
      • RH engine mounting bracket.
      • Blanking plug from cylinder block [4] .
  8. Turn crankshaft clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost aligned with hole in cylinder head [5] .
  9. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6] . Tool No.Mot.1489.
  10. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6] .
  11. Insert camshaft timing pin [7] . Tool No.Mot.1430.
  12. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
  13. Except Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop: Lock flywheel with large screwdriver. Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [8] .
  14. Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop: Fit flywheel locking tool [9] . Tool No.Mot.582.
  15. Remove:
      • Crankshaft pulley bolt [8] .
      • Crankshaft pulley [10] .
  16. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Move tensioner pulley away from belt.
  17. Remove:
      • Timing belt.
      • Tensioner pulley.

Installation

NOTE: Timing belt and tensioner pulley MUST be replaced.

  1. Fit new tensioner pulley. Finger tighten bolt [11] . Ensure tensioner pulley locking tab located correctly in cylinder head.
  2. Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 12 o’clock position [12] .
  3. Ensure high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark aligned as shown [13] .
  4. Insert timing pins [6] & [7] . Ensure timing pins located correctly.
  5. Remove one camshaft sprocket bolt [14] .

    NOTE: DO NOT slacken camshaft sprocket hub nut [15] .

  6. Slacken two camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [16] .
  7. Fit timing belt, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure marks on belt aligned with marks on sprockets [17] , [18] & [19] . Ensure belt is taut on non-tensioned side.

    NOTE: There should be 19 troughs between camshaft sprocket and high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing marks [19] & [18] and 51 troughs between high-pressure fuel pump sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks [18] & [17] .

  8. Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer at lower position [20] . Use 6 mm Allen key [21] . Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
  9. Ensure camshaft sprocket bolts not at end of slotted holes [22] .
  10. Fit camshaft sprocket bolt [14] .
  11. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts [14] & [16] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
  12. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
  13. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley bolt with a spacer [8] .
  14. Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop: Remove flywheel locking tool [9] .
  15. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost aligned with hole in cylinder head [5] .
  16. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6] .
  17. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6] .
  18. Ensure high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark aligned as shown [13] .
  19. Insert camshaft timing pin [7] .
  20. If timing pin cannot be inserted:
      • Slacken camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [14] & [16] .
      • Turn camshaft sprocket hub nut [15] until timing pin can be inserted.
  21. Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 12 o’clock position [12] .

    NOTE: Tensioner pulley pointer can be in two positions.

  22. Slacken camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [14] & [16] .
  23. Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [23] :
      • Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [24] .
      • Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [11] .
      • Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer aligned with notch [23] & [25] . Use 6 mm Allen key [24] .
  24. Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [20] :
      • Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [21] .
      • Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [11] .
      • Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until pointer aligned with notch [20] & [26] . Use 6 mm Allen key [21] .
  25. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
  26. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts [14] & [16] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
  27. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
  28. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost aligned with hole in cylinder head [5] .
  29. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6] .
  30. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6] .
  31. Insert camshaft timing pin [7] .
  32. If timing pin cannot be inserted: Repeat installation procedure.
  33. Remove old crankshaft pulley bolt and spacer [8] .
  34. Fit new crankshaft pulley bolt [8] .
  35. Except Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop: Lock flywheel with large screwdriver.
  36. Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop: Fit flywheel locking tool [9] .
  37. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [8] . Tightening torque:
      • Twingo II – A: 80 Nm.
      • Modus/Kangoo/Kangoo II/Kangoo Be Bop – B: 120 Nm + 95±15°.
      • Clio II/Clio Campus/Clio Storia/Modus II – B (M14): 120 Nm + 95±15°.
      • Clio II/Clio Campus/Clio Storia/Modus II – C (M12): 60 Nm + 100±10°.
  38. Remove:
      • Timing pins [6] & [7] .
      • Flywheel locking tool [9] .
  39. Fit blanking plug [4] . Tightening torque: 20-25 Nm.

    NOTE: DO NOT start engine without auxiliary drive belt fitted as damage may occur to crankshaft pulley.

  40. Install components in reverse order of removal.
