Special tools

• None required.

Special precautions

• Disconnect battery earth lead.
• DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
• Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
• Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
• DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
• Observe all tightening torques.

Valve timing procedures

Removal

1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Remove:
   • Engine top cover (if necessary).
   • RH front wheel.
   • RH splash guard.
   • Auxiliary drive belt.
   • Auxiliary drive belt tensioner (if necessary).
   • Crankshaft pulley bolts [1] .
   • Crankshaft pulley [2] .
3. Support engine.
4. Remove:
   • RH engine mounting.
   • Timing belt covers [3] & [4] .
   • RH engine mounting bracket.
5. Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [5] & [6] .
6. Insert locking pin in tensioner backplate [7] .
7. Slacken bolt [8] . Use Allen key.
8. Turn tensioner clockwise until it touches stop. Use bolt [9] .
9. Tighten bolt [8] .
10. Remove timing belt.
    NOTE: Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused.

Installation

1. Check tensioner body for leakage or damage. Replace if necessary.
2. Check tensioner pulley, guide pulley and water pump sprocket for smooth operation. Replace if necessary.
3. Ensure timing marks aligned [5] & [6] .
4. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
   NOTE: Observe direction of rotation marks on belt.
5. Slacken bolt [8] . Use Allen key.
6. Turn tensioner anti-clockwise until it touches stop. Use bolt [9] .
7. Turn crankshaft slowly two turns clockwise.
8. Ensure timing marks aligned [5] & [6] .
9. Tighten bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 10-12 Nm.
10. Remove locking pin from tensioner backplate [7] .
11. Install components in reverse order of removal.
12. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts [1] . Tightening torque: 30-34 Nm.
