How to Replace timing chains on VW Golf 5 3.2 R32

Special tools

  • Camshaft locking tool – No.T10068A.
  • Crankshaft pulley holding tool – No.T10069.

General precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • Observe tightening torques.
  • If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
  • Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed.

Removal

  • Removal/installation of timing chain(s) requires:
      • Engine removal.
      • Sump removal.
  • Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .
  • Ensure camshaft lobes for No.1 cylinder angled upwards [2] .
  • Install camshaft locking tool [3] .
  • If camshaft locking tool cannot be installed, turn crankshaft 360°.
  • Remove timing chain tensioner [4] .

NOTE: Mark direction of rotation on chains.

  • Remove chain guide [5] .
  • Remove upper timing chain.
  • Slacken intermediate shaft sprocket bolt 360° [6] .

NOTE: Hold crankshaft pulley with crankshaft pulley holding tool.

  • Remove timing chain tensioner [7] .
  • Remove intermediate shaft sprockets and lower timing chain.

Installation

  • Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .

NOTE: Ground tooth on crankshaft sprocket aligned with rear main bearing joint [8] .

  • Install intermediate shaft rear sprocket (large diameter) and lower timing chain [9] .
  • Ensure intermediate shaft sprocket timing marks aligned [10] .
  • Install intermediate shaft front sprocket (small diameter) [11] . Finger tighten bolt [6] .
  • Reset lower timing chain tensioner [7] :
      • Release locking mechanism [12] . Use screwdriver.
      • Push tensioner rail against chain tensioner [13] .
      • Install timing chain tensioner [7] .
      • Tighten tensioner bolts [14] . Tightening torque: 8 Nm.
  • Tighten intermediate shaft sprocket bolt [6] . Tightening torque: 60 Nm + 90°.

NOTE: Hold crankshaft pulley with crankshaft pulley holding tool.

  • Fit timing chain to camshaft sprockets ensuring copper coloured chain links aligned with timing marks [15] & [16] .
  • Fit timing chain to intermediate shaft front sprocket (small diameter) ensuring copper coloured chain link aligned with timing mark [17] .
  • Install chain guide [5] .
  • Remove camshaft locking tool [3] .
  • Push tensioner blade against chain [18] .
  • Turn crankshaft 2 turns clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .
  • Ensure camshaft lobes for No.1 cylinder angled upwards [2] .
  • Ensure camshaft locking tool can be fitted [3] . If not, repeat installation procedures.

NOTE: Coloured links may not be aligned.
