Special tools
- Flywheel locking tool – No.KV10117700.
Special precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- Observe tightening torques.
- If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
- Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed.
Valve timing procedures
NOTE: Timing chains may NOT have coloured links. If so, apply paint to timing chain links aligned with sprocket timing marks BEFORE removal.
- Removal/refitting requires:
- Lower and upper sump removal. Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .
- Ensure camshaft lobes for No.1 cylinder angled upwards [2] . If not, turn crankshaft 360°.
- Align coloured or painted links with crankshaft sprocket timing mark and timing marks on camshaft sprockets [3] & [4] .
NOTE: Timing chain may have one orange coloured link and two yellow coloured links.
- VQ35DE engine: Remove tensioner [5] :
- Push plate downwards [6] .
- Push plunger into tensioner housing [7] .
- Turn lever to locked position [6] .
- Retain in position with suitable pin [8] .
- VQ40DE engine: Remove tensioner [9] :
- Release tensioner plunger retaining clip [10] .
- Push plunger into tensioner housing [11] .
- Insert suitable pin to lock tensioner plunger [12] .
- Before removing camshaft coupling chains, insert locking pins into tensioner housings [13] . Ensure camshaft dowel pins at 12 o’clock position.
- Ensure crankshaft keyway at 11 o’clock position.
- During installation of camshaft coupling chains, align coloured or painted links with timing marks on rear of inlet and exhaust camshaft sprockets [14] & [15] .
- Install tensioner [5] or [9] :
- Remove locking pin [8] or [12] .
- Lubricate crankshaft sprocket bolt and camshaft sprocket bolts during assembly. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [16] :
- Murano/Pathfinder: 44 Nm +
- 90°. 350Z: 39-49 Nm + 90°.
