Special tools
- 6 mm drill bit.
Special precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
- Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Observe all tightening torques.

Valve timing procedures
Removal
- Remove:
- Engine top cover.
- Timing belt cover [1] .
- Turn crankshaft clockwise until timing marks aligned [2] & [3] .
- Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until 6 mm drill bit [4] can be inserted in hole [5] . Use Allen key [6] .
- Remove:
- Timing belt.
- Tensioner pulley bolt [7] .
- Tensioner pulley bolt [8] .
- Tensioner pulley [9] .
NOTE: Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused.
Installation
- Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3] .
- Fit new tensioner pulley [9] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt finger tight [7] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt finger tight [8] .
- If tensioner pulley has no resistance carry out following procedure:
- Turn tensioner pulley slowly anti-clockwise then clockwise. Repeat procedure several times or until resistance can be felt in tensioner pulley.
- Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until 6 mm drill bit [4] can be inserted in hole [5] . Use Allen key [6] .
- Fit timing belt.
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 37-52 Nm.
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [7] . Tightening torque: 8-11 Nm.
- Remove 6 mm drill bit [6] .
- Turn crankshaft slowly 2 turns until timing marks aligned [2] .
- If timing marks not aligned: Repeat installation procedure.
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
