Special tools

  • Crankshaft timing tool bolt – No.1.860.905.010.
  • Crankshaft timing tool – No.1.860.905.000.
  • Exhaust camshaft locking tool – No.1.870.896.900.
  • Exhaust camshaft locking tool – No.1.870.986.900.
  • Flywheel locking tool – No.1.860.898.000.

Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove:
    • Engine top cover.
    • RH front wheel.
    • Engine undershield.
    • RH front inner wing panel.
    • Auxiliary drive belt.
  3. Bravo: Fit flywheel locking tool [1] . Tool No.1.860.898.000.
  4. Remove:
    • Crankshaft pulley bolts [2] .
    • Crankshaft pulley [3] .
    • Bravo: Flywheel locking tool [1] .
    • Auxiliary drive belt tensioner assembly.
    • Auxiliary drive belt guide pulley.
    • Timing belt lower cover [4] .
    • Timing belt upper cover [5] .
  5. Disconnect coolant expansion tank top hose.
  6. Remove:
    • Coolant expansion tank bolts.
    • Timing belt upper cover [6] .
  7. Remove blanking plug in cylinder head for exhaust camshaft locking tool [7] .
  8. Fit exhaust camshaft locking tool [8] . Tool No.1.870.896.900 or No.1.870.986.900.
  9. Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation until locking tool heard to engage [8] .
  10. Remove oil pump bolt. Insert stud of crankshaft timing tool [9] . Tool No.1.860.905.000.
  11. Fit timing tool to crankshaft sprocket [10] . Tool No.1.860.905.000. Secure with bolt [11] . Tool No.1.860.905.010.
  12. Remove timing tool [10] .
  13. Slacken tensioner sprocket nut [12] .
  14. Move tensioner sprocket away from belt. Lightly tighten nut.
  15. Remove timing belt.

Installation

  1. Ensure exhaust camshaft locked with tool [8] .
  2. Slacken exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt [13] .
  3. Fit timing belt to crankshaft sprocket.
  4. Fit timing tool to crankshaft sprocket [10] . Secure with bolt [11] .
  5. Fit timing belt to remaining sprockets and pulleys.
  6. Lever tensioner sprocket bracket at position [14] until pointer [15] at maximum setting.
  7. Tighten tensioner sprocket nut [12] . Tightening torque: 23-28 Nm.
  8. Remove:
    • Timing tool [10] .
    • Locking tool [8] .
  9. Slacken tensioner sprocket nut [12] .
  10. Lever tensioner sprocket bracket at position [14] until pointer [15] and mark [16] aligned.
  11. Tighten tensioner sprocket nut [12] . Tightening torque: 23-28 Nm.
  12. Hold exhaust camshaft sprocket.
  13. Tighten exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt [13] . Tightening torque:
    • A – Bravo: 28-31 Nm + 40°.
    • B – Stilo: 120 Nm.
  14. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.
  15. Fit exhaust camshaft locking tool [8] . Ensure camshaft locked with tool [8] .
  16. Fit crankshaft timing tool [10] .
  17. Ensure tensioner pointer [15] and mark [16] aligned.
  18. If not: Repeat tensioning procedure.
  19. Remove:
    • Timing tool [10] .
    • Locking tool [8] .
  20. Fit oil pump housing bolt.
  21. Fit blanking plug [7] .
  22. Install components in reverse order of removal.
  23. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts [2] . Tightening torque: 23-28 Nm.
