Replacement Interval Guide
- Renault recommend:
- Mégane III:
- Replacement every 72,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley and guide pulley must be replaced).
- Modus/Grand Modus II:
- 2008:
- Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years (tensioner pulley and guide pulley must be replaced).
- 2009→:
- Replacement every 72,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley and guide pulley must be replaced).
- The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

Special Tools
- Camshaft setting bar – Nos.Mot.1496/1750.
- Camshaft blanking plug tools – Nos.Mot.1487/1488.
- Camshaft sprocket holding tool – No.Mot.799-01.
- Camshaft sprockets locking tool – No.Mot.1490-01.
- Crankshaft timing pin – No.Mot.1489.
- Modus/Grand Modus II: Flywheel locking tool – No.Mot.582-01.
- Modus/Grand Modus II: Guide pulley removal/fitting tool – No.Mot.1368.
Special Precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
- Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Observe all tightening torques.
Removal
WARNING: Engines with variable valve timing: Mark camshaft sprockets and camshaft adjusters with chalk or paint prior to timing belt removal to assist alignment on installation.
- Raise and support front of vehicle.
- Remove:
- Engine top cover.
- Throttle body assembly.
- RH front wheel.
- RH front wheel arch liner.
- Engine undershield.
- Auxiliary drive belt.
NOTE: Auxiliary drive belt(s), tensioner pulley and guide pulley(s) MUST be replaced.
- Modus/Grand Modus II – remove:
- Plenum chamber cover.
- Plenum chamber front panel.
- Battery covers (if fitted).
- Battery.
- Battery tray.
- Air intake duct.
- Air filter assembly.
- Starter motor.
- Support engine.NOTE: Mark position of RH engine mounting before removal.
- Remove:
- RH engine mounting and bracket.
- Engine lower tie-bar.
- Engine lifting eye.
- Blanking plugs from rear of camshafts. Use tool Nos.Mot.1487/1488.
- Blanking plug from cylinder block [1] .
- Turn crankshaft clockwise until grooves in rear of camshafts are just before horizontally aligned position.NOTE: Grooves located below cylinder head upper face.
- Insert timing pin in cylinder block [3] . Tool No.Mot.1489.
- Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [4] .
- Ensure grooves in rear of camshafts horizontally aligned [2] .
- Modus/Grand Modus II: Fit flywheel locking tool [5] . Tool No.Mot.582-01.
- Mégane III: Lock flywheel with large screwdriver.
- Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [6] .
- Remove:
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [6] .
- Crankshaft pulley [7] .
- Timing belt covers [8] & [9] .
- Flywheel locking tool.
NOTE: DO NOT allow crankshaft sprocket to fall off crankshaft.
- Slacken tensioner pulley nut [10] .
- Remove:
- Tensioner pulley nut [10] .
- Tensioner pulley [11] .
- Guide pulley bolt [12] . Use tool No.Mot.1368.
- Guide pulley.
- Timing belt.NOTE: DO NOT allow crankshaft sprocket to fall off crankshaft.
- Fit setting bar to rear of camshafts [13] . Tool Nos.Mot.1496/1750.
Installation
NOTE: Timing belt, tensioner pulley and guide pulley MUST be replaced.
- Ensure crankshaft timing pin inserted [3] . Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [4] .
- Ensure grooves in camshafts aligned [2] .
- Ensure setting bar fitted correctly [13] .
- Remove crankshaft sprocket. Degrease sprocket. Degrease end of crankshaft. Refit crankshaft sprocket.NOTE: Crankshaft keyway at 12 o’clock position [14] .
- Remove:
- Exhaust camshaft sprocket nut [15] . Use tool No.Mot.799-01.NOTE: Replace camshaft stud if loosened when removing nut.
- Exhaust camshaft sprocket [16] . Degrease sprocket. Degrease end of camshaft.
- Inlet camshaft sprocket blanking plug [17] . Use tool No.Mot.799-01.
- Inlet camshaft sprocket bolt [18] . Use tool No.Mot.799-01.
- Inlet camshaft sprocket [19] . Degrease sprocket. Degrease end of camshaft.WARNING: Failure to degrease components may lead to sprockets slipping on crankshaft and camshafts, resulting in severe engine damage.
- Fit exhaust camshaft sprocket [16] . Use new nut.
- Fit inlet camshaft sprocket [19] . Use new bolt.
- Lightly tighten nut and bolt of each camshaft sprocket [15] & [18] .
- Ensure camshaft sprockets can turn freely without tilting.
- Ensure inlet camshaft VVT unit locked.
- Ensure Renault logo on exhaust camshaft sprocket positioned as shown [20] .
- Ensure inlet camshaft sprocket mark at 12 o’clock position [21] .
- Mark cylinder head with paint or chalk where indicated [22] .
- Fit new tensioner pulley [11] .NOTE: Ensure lug on rear of tensioner pulley located in groove in water pump housing [23] .
- Fit timing belt to camshaft sprockets. Ensure camshaft sprockets do not move.
- Fit camshaft sprockets locking tool [24] . Tool No.Mot.1490-01.
- Fit timing belt to tensioner pulley, crankshaft sprocket and water pump sprocket.
- Fit new guide pulley. Tighten guide pulley bolt [12] . Tightening torque: 50 Nm. Use tool No.Mot.1368.
- Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until movable pointer [25] aligned with notch [26] . Use 6 mm Allen key [27] .
- Temporarily tighten tensioner pulley nut [10] . Tightening torque: 7 Nm.
- Fit timing belt lower cover [9] .
- Remove timing belt lower cover access panel [28] .
- Fit new crankshaft pulley [7] .
- Fit new crankshaft pulley bolt [6] .
- Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [4] .
- Modus/Grand Modus II: Fit flywheel locking tool [5] .
- Mégane III: Lock flywheel with large screwdriver.
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [6] . Tightening torque: 40 Nm + 145±15°.
- Tighten exhaust camshaft sprocket nut [15] . Tightening torque: 30 Nm + 84±4°.
- Tighten inlet camshaft sprocket bolt [18] . Tightening torque: 100 Nm.
- Remove camshaft sprockets locking tool [24] .
- Remove:
- Modus/Grand Modus II: Flywheel locking tool [5] .
- Crankshaft timing pin [3] .
- Setting bar [13] .
- Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise to setting position.
- Ensure timing marks aligned [21] & [22] .
- Insert timing pin in cylinder block [3] .
- Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [4] .
- Ensure tensioner pulley pointer aligned with notch [25] & [26] . Tighten tensioner pulley nut [10] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
- If not:
- Slacken tensioner pulley nut [10] by a maximum of one turn whilst holding 6 mm Allen key [27] .
- Turn tensioner pulley until pointer aligned with notch [25] & [26] . Use 6 mm Allen key [27] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley nut [10] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
- Ensure Renault logo on exhaust camshaft sprocket positioned as shown [20] .
- Ensure inlet camshaft sprocket marks aligned [21] & [22] .
- Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [4] .
- Ensure grooves in camshafts aligned [2] .
- Ensure setting bar can be easily fitted [13] . If not: Repeat installation procedure.
- Fit new inlet camshaft sprocket blanking plug [17] . Tightening torque: 15 Nm.
- Remove:
- Setting bar [13] .
- Crankshaft timing pin [3] .
- Refit blanking plug [1] . Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
- Refit timing belt lower cover access panel [28] .
- Fit new blanking plugs to rear of camshafts. Use tool Nos.Mot.1487/1488.
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
