Replacement Interval Guide

- Except 750/766/794/796:
- →2006:
- Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 2007→:
- 12,000 mile service intervals:
- Replacement every 96,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 12,500 mile service intervals:
- Replacement every 100,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 18,000 mile service intervals:
- Replacement every 90,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 750/766:
- →2006: Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 2007-23/04/10: Replacement every 96,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 24/04/10→: Replacement every 104,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 794/796:
- →2008:
- Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years under normal conditions (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- Replacement every 54,000 miles or 5 years under adverse conditions (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- 2009→:
- Replacement every 96,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

Special Tools
- Crankshaft timing pin – Renault No.Mot.1489.
- Camshaft timing pin – Renault No.Mot.1430.
- Wiper arm extractor (Scénic/Grand Scénic) – Renault No.Mot.1552.
Special Precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
- Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Observe all tightening torques.
Removal
NOTE: If timing belt has failed, it is possible that the camshaft sprocket key has been damaged which would cause incorrect valve timing.
- Raise and support front of vehicle.
- Remove:
- Engine top cover.
- Clio/Scénic/Grand Scénic: Plenum chamber cover.
- Scénic/Grand Scénic: Wiper arms. Use tool No.Mot.1552.
- Clio/Scénic/Grand Scénic: Plenum chamber front panel.
- Scénic/Grand Scénic: Air filter access panel.
- Laguna: Air filter assembly.
- Logan/Mégane/Laguna/Fluence/Scénic/Grand Scénic: Auxiliary drive belt.
NOTE: Auxiliary drive belt(s), tensioner pulley and guide pulley(s) MUST be replaced.
- Support engine.
- Unclip fuel pipes from RH engine mounting intermediate bracket.
- Remove:
- Engine undershield.
- Engine lower tie-bar.
- Clio TL4 gearbox: Remove starter motor.NOTE: Mark position of RH engine mounting before removal.
- Remove:
- RH engine mounting.
- RH front wheel.
- RH wheel arch liner.
- Clio: Fuel filter mounting.
- Clio: Move aside fuel filter assembly. DO NOT disconnect fuel pipes.
- Clio: Remove:
- Fuel filter rear cover.
- Auxiliary drive belt.NOTE: Auxiliary drive belt(s), tensioner pulley and guide pulley(s) MUST be replaced.
- Lock flywheel with large screwdriver. Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .
- Remove:
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .
- Crankshaft pulley [2] .
- 764/772: Timing belt upper cover [3] .
- 722/724/728/729/766/768/770/774/780/782/794/796/832/834/836/837/842/846: Timing belt upper cover [4] .
- 722/724/728/729/766/830/834/838/846: High-pressure fuel pump position sensor [5] .
- 722/724/728/729/766/768/770/774/780/782/832/834/836/837/842/846: Timing belt lower cover [6] .
- RH engine mounting bracket.
- Blanking plug from cylinder block [7] .
- Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley bolt with a spacer [1] .
- Turn crankshaft clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost aligned with hole in cylinder head [8] .
- Insert crankshaft timing pin [9] . Tool No.Mot.1489.
- Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [9] .
- Insert camshaft timing pin [10] . Tool No.1430.
- Remove timing pins [9] & [10] .
- Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Move tensioner pulley away from belt.
- Remove:
- Timing belt.
- Tensioner pulley bolt [11] .
- Tensioner pulley.
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .
Installation
NOTE: Timing belt and tensioner pulley MUST be replaced.
- Check condition of water pump, replace if necessary.
- Fit new tensioner pulley. Ensure tensioner pulley retaining lug located correctly in cylinder head.
- Fit new tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Finger tighten bolt.
- Insert timing pins [9] & [10] .
- Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [9] .
- Remove crankshaft sprocket. Degrease sprocket. Degrease end of crankshaft.WARNING: Failure to degrease components may lead to sprocket slipping on crankshaft, resulting in severe engine damage.
- Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 12 o’clock position [12] .
- Refit crankshaft sprocket.
- Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley bolt with a spacer [1] .
- 732/764/768/770/772/774/794/796/832/836/837/846: Ensure high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark aligned as shown [13] .
- 722/724/728/729/750/752/766/830/834/838/842: Ensure high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark aligned with bolt head [14] .
- Remove one camshaft sprocket bolt [15] .NOTE: DO NOT slacken camshaft sprocket hub nut [16] .
- Slacken two camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [17] .
- Fit timing belt, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure marks on belt aligned with marks on sprockets [18] , [19] & [20] . Ensure belt is taut on non-tensioned side.NOTE: There should be 19 troughs between camshaft sprocket and high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing marks [20] & [19] and 51 troughs between high-pressure fuel pump sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks [19] & [18] .
- Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer at lower position [21] . Use 6 mm Allen key [22] . Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
- Ensure camshaft sprocket bolts not at end of slotted holes [23] . If not: Repeat installation procedure.
- Fit camshaft sprocket bolt [15] .
- Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts [15] & [17] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
- Remove timing pins [9] & [10] .
- Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost aligned with hole in cylinder head [8] .
- Insert crankshaft timing pin [9] .
- Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [9] .
- Insert camshaft timing pin [10] .
- Slacken camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [15] & [17] .
- If timing pin cannot be inserted:
- Slacken camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [15] & [17] .
- Turn camshaft sprocket hub nut [16] until timing pin [10] can be inserted.
- DO NOT tighten bolts [15] & [17] .
- Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 12 o’clock position [12] .
- 732/764/768/770/772/774/794/796/832/836/837/846: Ensure high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark aligned as shown [13] .
- 722/724/728/729/750/752/766/830/834/838/842: Ensure high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark aligned with bolt head [14] .NOTE: There should be 19 troughs between camshaft sprocket and high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing marks [20] & [19] and 51 troughs between high-pressure fuel pump sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks [19] & [18] .NOTE: Tensioner pulley pointer can be in two positions.
- Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [24] :
- Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [25] .
- Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [11] .
- Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer aligned with notch [24] & [26] . Use 6 mm Allen key [25] .
- Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [21] :
- Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [22] .
- Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [11] .
- Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until pointer aligned with notch [21] & [27] . Use 6 mm Allen key [22] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
- Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts [15] & [17] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
- Remove timing pins [9] & [10] .
- Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost aligned with hole in cylinder head [8] .
- Insert crankshaft timing pin [9] .
- Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [9] .
- Insert camshaft timing pin [10] .
- If timing pin cannot be inserted: Repeat installation procedure.
- Remove old crankshaft pulley bolt and spacer [1] .NOTE: DO NOT start engine without auxiliary drive belt fitted as damage may occur to crankshaft pulley.
- Laguna: Fit new crankshaft pulley [2] .
- Clio/Logan/Mégane/Scénic/Grand Scénic/Fluence: Fit crankshaft pulley [2] .
- Fit new crankshaft pulley bolt [1] .
- Lock flywheel with large screwdriver.
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [1] . Tightening torque:
- M12: 60 Nm + 100±10°.
- M14: 120 Nm + 95±15°.
- Remove timing pins [9] & [10] .
- Fit blanking plug [7] . Tightening torque: 20-25 Nm.
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
