Replacement Interval Guide
- Renault recommend:
- 2008:
- Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years (tensioner pulley and guide pulley must be replaced).
- 2009-08/09:
- Replacement every 72,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley and guide pulley must be replaced).
- 09/09→:
- Replacement every 75,000 miles or 6 years (tensioner pulley and guide pulley must be replaced).
- The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

Special Tools
- Camshaft setting bar – Renault Nos.Mot.1496/1750.
- Camshaft sprockets locking tool – Renault No.Mot.1490-01.
- Crankshaft timing pin – Renault No.Mot.1489.
- Exhaust camshaft blanking plug tool – Renault No.Mot.1488.
- Guide pulley wrench – Renault No.Mot.1368.
- Inlet camshaft blanking plug tool – Renault No.Mot.1487.
Special Precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
- Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Observe all tightening torques.
Removal
WARNING: Engines with variable valve timing: Mark camshaft sprockets and camshaft adjusters with chalk or paint prior to timing belt removal to assist alignment on installation.
- Raise and support front of vehicle.
- Remove:
- Windscreen wiper arms.
- Scuttle panel.
- Front bumper.
- Headlamps.
- Bonnet shut panel.
- Air intake duct.
- Air filter assembly.
- Throttle body assembly.
- RH front wheel.
- RH front wheel arch liner.
- Engine undershield.
- Auxiliary drive belt.
NOTE: Auxiliary drive belt(s), tensioner pulley and guide pulley(s) MUST be replaced.
- Support engine.
- Remove:
- RH engine mounting and bracket.
- Rear engine torque reaction link.
- Disconnect wiring harness from timing belt lower cover.
- Disconnect wiring harness from rear of cylinder head cover.
- Remove:
- Engine lifting eye.
- Blanking plugs from rear of camshafts.
- Blanking plug from cylinder block [1] .
- Turn crankshaft clockwise until grooves in camshafts almost aligned [2] .
NOTE: Grooves located below cylinder head upper face.
- Insert crankshaft timing pin in cylinder block [3] . Tool No.Mot.1489.
- Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [4] .
- Ensure grooves in camshafts aligned [2] .
- Lock flywheel with large screwdriver. Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
- Remove:
- Crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
- Crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Timing belt covers [7] & [8] .
- Slacken tensioner pulley nut [9] .
- Remove:
- Tensioner pulley nut [9] .
- Tensioner pulley [10] .
- Guide pulley bolt [11] .
- Guide pulley.
- Timing belt.
NOTE: DO NOT allow crankshaft sprocket to fall off crankshaft.
Installation
NOTE: Timing belt, tensioner pulley and guide pulley MUST be replaced.
- Ensure crankshaft timing pin inserted [3] .
- Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [4] .
- Ensure grooves in camshafts aligned [2] .
- Fit setting bar to rear of camshafts [12] . Tool Nos.Mot.1496/1750.
- Remove and degrease crankshaft sprocket. Degrease end of crankshaft. Refit crankshaft sprocket.
NOTE: Crankshaft keyway at 12 o’clock position [13] .
- Fit camshaft sprockets locking tool [14] . Tool No.Mot.1490-01.
- Remove:
- Exhaust camshaft sprocket nut [15] .
NOTE: Replace camshaft stud if loosened when removing nut.
- Inlet camshaft sprocket blanking plug [16] .
- Inlet camshaft sprocket bolt [17] .
- Camshaft sprockets locking tool [14] .
- Exhaust camshaft sprocket [18] . Degrease sprocket. Degrease end of camshaft.
- Inlet camshaft sprocket [19] . Degrease sprocket. Degrease end of camshaft.WARNING: Failure to degrease components may lead to sprockets slipping on crankshaft and camshafts, resulting in severe engine damage.
- Exhaust camshaft sprocket nut [15] .
- Fit exhaust camshaft sprocket [18] . Use new nut.
- Fit inlet camshaft sprocket [19] . Use new bolt.
- Lightly tighten nut and bolt of each camshaft sprocket [15] & [17] .
- Ensure camshaft sprockets can turn freely without tilting.
- Ensure Renault logo on exhaust camshaft sprocket positioned as shown [20] .
- Ensure inlet camshaft sprocket mark at 12 o’clock position [21] .
- Mark cylinder head with paint or chalk where indicated [22] .
- Ensure inlet camshaft VVT unit locked.
- Fit new tensioner pulley [10] .
NOTE: Ensure lug on rear of tensioner pulley located in groove in water pump housing [23] .
- Fit timing belt loosely to sprockets and pulleys.
NOTE: Ensure belt is taut between camshaft sprockets.
- Fit camshaft sprockets locking tool [14] .
- Fit new guide pulley. Tighten guide pulley bolt [11] . Tightening torque: 50 Nm. Use tool No.Mot.1368.
- Remove camshaft sprockets locking tool [14] .
- Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until movable pointer [24] aligned with notch [25] . Use 6 mm Allen key [26] .
- Temporarily tighten tensioner pulley nut [9] . Tightening torque: 7 Nm.
- Fit timing belt lower cover [8] .
- Fit new crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Lock flywheel with large screwdriver.
- Fit new crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: 120 Nm + 95±10°.
- Tighten inlet camshaft sprocket bolt [17] . Tightening torque: 100 Nm.
- Fit new inlet camshaft sprocket blanking plug [16] . Tightening torque: 15 Nm.
- Tighten exhaust camshaft sprocket nut [15] . Tightening torque: 30 Nm + 84±4°.
- Remove:
- Timing belt lower cover access panel [27] .
- Camshaft setting bar [12] .
- Crankshaft timing pin [3] .
- Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until just before setting position [21] & [22] .
- Insert crankshaft timing pin in cylinder block [3] .
- Turn crankshaft slightly clockwise.
- Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [4] .
- Remove crankshaft timing pin [3] .
- Ensure tensioner pulley pointer aligned with notch [24] & [25] .
- If not:
- Slacken tensioner pulley nut [9] by a maximum of one turn whilst holding 6 mm Allen key [26] .
- Turn tensioner pulley until pointer aligned with notch [24] & [25] . Use 6 mm Allen key [26] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley nut [9] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
- Insert crankshaft timing pin in cylinder block [3] .
- Ensure crankshaft web against timing pin [4] .
- Ensure grooves in camshafts aligned [2] .
- Ensure setting bar can be easily fitted [12] . If not: Repeat installation procedure.
- Remove:
- Setting bar [12] .
- Timing pin [3] .
- Refit blanking plug to cylinder block [1] . Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
- Refit timing belt lower cover access panel [27] .
- Fit new blanking plugs to rear of camshafts. Use tool Nos.Mot.1487/1488.
NOTE: DO NOT start engine without auxiliary drive belt fitted as damage may occur to crankshaft pulley.
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
