Replacement Interval Guide
- Jaguar recommend:
- Replace timing belt every 105,000 miles or 10 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- Replace high-pressure fuel pump belt every 150,000 miles or 10 years (tensioner pulley must also be replaced).
- The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

Special Tools
- Camshaft sprocket aligning tool – No.303-1132.
- Camshaft sprocket timing pins – No.303-1126.
- Flywheel timing tool (AT) – No.303-1117.
- Flywheel timing tool (MT) – No.303-1116.
Special Precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
- Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Observe all tightening torques.
Timing Belt
Removal
NOTE: The high-pressure fuel pump fitted to this engine does not require timing.
- Raise and support front of vehicle.
- Remove:
- Air filter housing and hoses.
- Engine top cover.
- Engine undershield.
- Auxiliary drive belt.
- Timing belt LH upper cover [1] .
- Disconnect intercooler intake housing multi plug.
- Remove:
- Intercooler intake housing.
- Intercooler intake housing hose.
- Disconnect:
- Coolant hose from timing belt RH upper cover.
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor wiring harness.
- Remove:
- Timing belt RH upper cover [2] .
- Crankshaft pulley bolts [3] .
- Crankshaft pulley [4] .
- Intercooler top hose.
- Turbocharger air hose.
- Water pump pulley bolts.
- Water pump pulley.
- Timing belt lower cover [5] .
- Starter motor.
- Blanking plug from cylinder block.
- Turn crankshaft to TDC on No.1 cylinder.
- Ensure TDC hole in flywheel aligned [6] .
- Ensure camshaft sprocket CA2 alignment hole at 7 o’clock and camshaft sprocket CA1 alignment hole at 5 o’clock [7] .
- Fit flywheel timing tool [8] . Tool No.303-1116/303-1117.
- Secure flywheel timing tool using starter motor bolt [9] .
- Insert timing pins in camshaft sprockets [7] . Tool No.303-1126.
- Remove:
- Auxiliary drive belt tensioner pulley.
- Auxiliary drive belt tensioner pulley bracket.
- Slacken bolts of each camshaft sprocket [10] .
- Remove:
- Tensioner pulley bolt [11] .
- Tensioner pulley [12] .
- Timing belt.
Installation
- Fit new tensioner pulley [12] .
- Fit new tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Finger tighten bolt.
- Ensure timing pins located correctly [7] .
- Turn each camshaft sprocket fully clockwise in slotted holes [13] .
- Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
- Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise. Use Allen key.
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [11] . Tightening torque: 24 Nm.
- Ensure tensioner pulley correctly aligned [14] .
- Tighten bolts of each camshaft sprocket [10] . Tightening torque: 23 Nm.
- Remove:
- Camshaft sprocket timing pins [7] .
- Flywheel timing tool [8] .
- Turn crankshaft slowly two turns clockwise.
- Fit flywheel timing tool [8] .
- Insert timing pin in camshaft sprocket CA1 [7] .
- Fit aligning tool to camshaft sprocket CA2 [15] . Tool No.303-1132.
- Ensure camshafts aligned.
- Remove:
- Camshaft sprocket timing pin [7] .
- Camshaft sprocket aligning tool [15] .
- Flywheel timing tool [8] .
- Fit blanking plug to cylinder block.
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts [3] . Tightening torque:
- S-Type/XJ6 – A: 14 Nm.
- XF – B: 25 Nm.
High-Pressure Fuel Pump Belt
Removal
- Raise and support front of vehicle.
- RH: Remove:
- Engine top cover.
- Pollen filter.
- Engine bay support bracket.
- Scuttle panel.
- Pollen filter housing.
- LH: Remove:
- Scuttle panel.
- Brake fluid reservoir.
- Brake master cylinder.
- Brake servo.
- Windscreen wiper assembly.
- Reposition engine wiring harness bracket.
- Remove:
- High-pressure fuel pump belt cover [16] .
- Tensioner pulley bolt [17] .
- Tensioner pulley [18] .
- High-pressure fuel pump belt.
NOTE: The high-pressure fuel pump rotates in an anti-clockwise direction when viewed from the rear of the engine.
Installation
NOTE: DO NOT remove tensioner locking pin before fitting tensioner pulley to engine.
- Fit new high-pressure fuel pump belt.
- Fit new tensioner pulley [18] .
- Fit new tensioner pulley bolt [17] .NOTE: Ensure lug on rear of tensioner pulley located in groove in cylinder head [19] .
- Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [17] . Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
- Remove tensioner pulley locking pin [20] .
- Fit high-pressure fuel pump belt cover.
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
