Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

NOTE: Normal direction of crankshaft rotation is anti-clockwise.

  1. Remove:
    • Undershield.
    • Auxiliary drive belts.
    • PAS pump. DO NOT disconnect hoses.
  2. Support engine.
  3. Remove:
    • LH engine mounting.
    • Cylinder head cover.
    • Timing belt centre cover [1].
  4. Turn crankshaft to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [2].
  5. Ensure ‘UP’ mark on camshaft sprockets at top [3].
  6. Remove:
    • Crankshaft pulley bolt [9].
    • Crankshaft pulley [4].
    • Timing belt lower cover [5].
  7. Slacken tensioner bolt [6]. Move tensioner away from belt and tighten bolt.
  8. Remove timing belt.

Installation

  1. Ensure timing marks aligned [7] & [8].
  2. Ensure ‘UP’ mark on camshaft sprockets at top [3].
  3. Fit timing belt in following order:
    • Crankshaft sprocket.
    • Tensioner pulley.
    • Water pump sprocket.
    • Exhaust camshaft sprocket.
    • Inlet camshaft sprocket.
  4. Slacken and tighten tensioner bolt [6].
  5. Turn crankshaft six turns anti-clockwise. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [7].
  6. Slacken tensioner bolt [6].
  7. Turn crankshaft anti-clockwise for 3 teeth on camshaft sprocket.
  8. Tighten tensioner bolt to 54 Nm [6].
  9. Turn crankshaft two turns anti-clockwise. Ensure timing marks aligned [7] & [8].
  10. Install components in reverse order of removal.
  11. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [9]. Tightening torque: 177 Nm.
