Special tools

• Crankshaft pulley holding tool (hydraulic PAS) – Honda Nos.07JAB-0010200/07MAB-PY30100.
• Crankshaft pulley holding tool (electric PAS) – Honda Nos.07JAB-0010200/07JAB0010400.
• Crankshaft pulley holding tool (FR-V) – Honda Nos.07JAB-001020B/07MAB-PY30100.
• Crankshaft pulley bolt wrench (FR-V) – Honda No.07JAA-001020A.

Special precautions

• Disconnect battery earth lead.
• DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
• Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
• Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
• DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
• Observe all tightening torques.

Valve timing procedures

Removal

NOTE: Normal direction of crankshaft rotation is anti-clockwise.

1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Remove:
   • LH front wheel.
   • Lower splash guard.
   • Auxiliary drive belt(s).
   • Dipstick and tube (if necessary).
3. Support engine.
4. Remove:
   • PAS pump. DO NOT disconnect hoses.
   • Alternator.
   • LH engine mounting and bracket.
5. Turn crankshaft to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [1] .
   NOTE: Crankshaft pulley of hydraulic PAS shown [1] .
6. Ensure ‘UP’ mark on camshaft sprocket at top.
7. Remove:
   • Cylinder head cover.
   • Timing belt upper cover [2] .
8. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [3] .
9. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt [4] .
   • Hydraulic PAS: Use tool Nos.07JAB-0010200/07MAB-PY30100.
   • Electric PAS: Use tool Nos.07JAB-0010200/07JAB0010400.
   • FR-V: Use tool Nos.07JAB-001020B/07MAB-PY30100 & 07JAA-001020A.
10. Remove:
    • Crankshaft pulley [5] .
    • Timing belt lower cover [6] .
    • Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
11. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [7] .
12. Insert Allen key into tensioner and turn anti-clockwise to release tension on belt [8] .
13. Remove timing belt.

Installation

1. Check condition of water pump.
2. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [7] .
3. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [3] .
4. Ensure ‘UP’ mark on camshaft sprocket at top.
5. Turn Allen key clockwise [8] until holes [9] aligned.
6. Insert 3 mm pin [10] through holes [9] in tensioner.
7. Slacken tensioner bolt 1/2 turn [11] .
8. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket.
9. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets on non-tensioned side.
10. Turn crankshaft six turns anti-clockwise. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [7] .
11. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [3] .
12. Tighten tensioner bolt [11] . Tightening torque: 44 Nm.
13. Remove 3 mm pin from tensioner [10] .
14. Install components in reverse order of removal.
15. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [4] . Tightening torque: 20 Nm + 90°.
