Special tools
- Handle – Honda No.07JAB-0010200.
- Crankshaft pulley holding tool – Honda No.07MAB-PY30100.
- Balancer shaft locking pin – Honda No.07LAG-PT20100.
Special precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
- Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Observe all tightening torques.

Valve timing procedures
Removal
NOTE: Normal direction of crankshaft rotation is anti-clockwise. Balancer shaft belt must be removed before removing timing belt.
- Remove:
- Lower splash guard.
- Auxiliary drive belts.
- PAS pump. DO NOT disconnect hoses.
- Cylinder head cover.
- Timing belt upper cover [1] .
- Turn crankshaft to TDC on No.1 cylinder [2] . Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprocket aligned with upper cylinder head face [3] . Ensure ‘UP’ mark on camshaft sprocket at top [4] .
- Hold crankshaft pulley. Use tool Nos.07JAB-0010200 and 07MAB-PY30100. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
- Support engine.
- Remove:
- Crankshaft pulley [6] .
- LH engine mounting.
- Dipstick and tube.
- Rubber seal for adjusting nut [7] .
- Timing belt lower cover [8] .
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor (if fitted).
- Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [9] .
- Fit 6 mm bolt at [15] . Lightly tighten bolt.
- Slacken tensioner nut [10] . Move tensioner away from belts. Lightly tighten nut.
- Remove:
- Balancer shaft belt.
- Balancer shaft belt sprocket from crankshaft.
- Timing belt.
Installation
- Ensure timing marks aligned [3], [4] & [9] .
NOTE: Align timing marks on camshaft sprocket with upper cylinder head face [3] . - Fit timing belt in clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
- Slacken tensioner nut [10] . Allow tensioner to operate. Tighten nut.
- Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Fit balancer shaft belt sprocket to crankshaft.
- Turn crankshaft slowly six turns anti-clockwise to settle belt.
- Ensure timing marks aligned [3], [4] & [9] .
- Slacken tensioner nut [10] .
- Turn crankshaft slowly anti-clockwise until three teeth of camshaft sprocket have passed timing marks [3] .
- Tighten tensioner nut [10] . Tightening torque: 44 Nm.
- Turn crankshaft slowly anti-clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [3], [4] & [9] .
- If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures.
- Tighten 6 mm bolt [15] to lock tensioner arm.
- Align rear balancer shaft timing marks [11] .
- Remove blanking plug [12] . Insert balancer shaft locking pin [13] . Tool No.07LAG-PT20100.
- Align front balancer shaft timing marks [14] .
- Remove crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Fit balancer shaft belt.
- Slacken tensioner nut [10] .
- Remove balancer shaft locking pin [13] . Fit blanking plug and tighten to 29 Nm [12] .
- Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley [6] . Turn crankshaft one turn anti-clockwise.
- Tighten tensioner nut [10] . Tightening torque: 44 Nm.
- Remove 6 mm bolt [15] .
- Remove crankshaft pulley [6] .
- Install components in reverse order of removal.
- Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: 245 Nm.
