Special tools

  • Handle – Honda No.07JAB-0010200.
  • Crankshaft pulley holding tool – Honda No.07MAB-PY30100.
  • Balancer shaft locking pin – Honda No.07LAG-PT20100.

Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Observe all tightening torques.

Removal

NOTE: Normal direction of crankshaft rotation is anti-clockwise. Balancer shaft belt must be removed before removing timing belt.

  1. Remove:
    • Lower splash guard.
    • Auxiliary drive belts.
    • PAS pump. DO NOT disconnect hoses.
    • Cylinder head cover.
    • Timing belt upper cover [1] .
  2. Turn crankshaft to TDC on No.1 cylinder [2] . Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprocket aligned with upper cylinder head face [3] . Ensure ‘UP’ mark on camshaft sprocket at top [4] .
  3. Hold crankshaft pulley. Use tool Nos.07JAB-0010200 and 07MAB-PY30100. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt [5] .
  4. Support engine.
  5. Remove:
    • Crankshaft pulley [6] .
    • LH engine mounting.
    • Dipstick and tube.
    • Rubber seal for adjusting nut [7] .
    • Timing belt lower cover [8] .
    • Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor (if fitted).
  6. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned [9] .
  7. Fit 6 mm bolt at [15] . Lightly tighten bolt.
  8. Slacken tensioner nut [10] . Move tensioner away from belts. Lightly tighten nut.
  9. Remove:
    • Balancer shaft belt.
    • Balancer shaft belt sprocket from crankshaft.
    • Timing belt.

Installation

  1. Ensure timing marks aligned [3], [4] & [9] .
    NOTE: Align timing marks on camshaft sprocket with upper cylinder head face [3] .
  2. Fit timing belt in clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
  3. Slacken tensioner nut [10] . Allow tensioner to operate. Tighten nut.
  4. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley [6] .
  5. Fit balancer shaft belt sprocket to crankshaft.
  6. Turn crankshaft slowly six turns anti-clockwise to settle belt.
  7. Ensure timing marks aligned [3], [4] & [9] .
  8. Slacken tensioner nut [10] .
  9. Turn crankshaft slowly anti-clockwise until three teeth of camshaft sprocket have passed timing marks [3] .
  10. Tighten tensioner nut [10] . Tightening torque: 44 Nm.
  11. Turn crankshaft slowly anti-clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [3], [4] & [9] .
  12. If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures.
  13. Tighten 6 mm bolt [15] to lock tensioner arm.
  14. Align rear balancer shaft timing marks [11] .
  15. Remove blanking plug [12] . Insert balancer shaft locking pin [13] . Tool No.07LAG-PT20100.
  16. Align front balancer shaft timing marks [14] .
  17. Remove crankshaft pulley [6] .
  18. Fit balancer shaft belt.
  19. Slacken tensioner nut [10] .
  20. Remove balancer shaft locking pin [13] . Fit blanking plug and tighten to 29 Nm [12] .
  21. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley [6] . Turn crankshaft one turn anti-clockwise.
  22. Tighten tensioner nut [10] . Tightening torque: 44 Nm.
  23. Remove 6 mm bolt [15] .
  24. Remove crankshaft pulley [6] .
  25. Install components in reverse order of removal.
  26. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: 245 Nm.
