How to Replace timing chain on Ford Ranger 3.2D TDi 2011-14

Special tools

  • Crankshaft pulley holding tool – No.303-1310.
  • Crankshaft sprocket locking tool – No.303-1587.

Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • Observe tightening torques.
  • If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
  • Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed.

Removal

  • Turn crankshaft clockwise until timing mark on each camshaft sprocket at 12 o’clock position [1] & [2].
  • Fit crankshaft sprocket locking tool [3].
  • Ensure timing mark on high-pressure fuel pump sprocket positioned as shown [4].
  • Lock camshafts in position with 6 mm drill bits [5].
  • Lock high-pressure fuel pump sprocket in position with 6 mm drill bit [6].
  • Lock timing chain tensioner in retracted position:
    • Release pawl [7].
    • Depress tensioner blade [8].
    • Insert suitable pin to lock tensioner plunger [9].
  • Remove tensioner.
  • Remove crankshaft sprocket locking tool [3].
  • Remove tensioner rail, chain guides and timing chain.

Installation

  • Ensure timing mark on each camshaft sprocket aligned at 12 o’clock position [1] & [2].
  • Ensure timing mark on high-pressure fuel pump sprocket positioned as shown [4].
  • Slacken bolts of each camshaft sprocket [10].
  • Align coloured chain links with timing mark on each sprocket [1] & [2].
  • Align coloured chain link with high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark [4].
  • Fit crankshaft sprocket locking tool [3].
  • Install tensioner rail and chain guides.
  • Install tensioner.
  • Remove tensioner locking pin [9].
  • Tighten bolts of each camshaft sprocket [10]. Tightening torque: 33 Nm.
  • Remove 6 mm drill bits [5] & [6].
  • Remove crankshaft sprocket locking tool [3].
  • Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.
  • Ensure timing mark on each camshaft sprocket aligned at 12 o’clock position [1] & [2].
  • Ensure timing mark on high-pressure fuel pump sprocket positioned as shown [4].
  • Lock camshafts in position with 6 mm drill bits [5].
  • Lock high-pressure fuel pump sprocket in position with 6 mm drill bit [6].
  • Fit crankshaft sprocket locking tool [3]. Remove 6 mm drill bits [5] & [6].
  • Remove crankshaft sprocket locking tool [3].
  • Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts [11]. Tightening torque: 45 Nm + 120Ā°.
