Special precautions
- Disconnect battery earth lead.
- Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
- Observe tightening torques.
- If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
- Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other sprockets.
- Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed.
Valve timing procedures
- Timing chains located at rear of engine.
- Removal/installation of timing chain(s) requires:
- Removal of engine and transmission.
- Flywheel removal.
NOTE: All bolts with an angular torque setting MUST be replaced.
- Engine at TDC No.1 cylinder [1] .
- Ensure camshafts correctly aligned [2] . Threaded holes in camshafts point upwards.
- Fit camshaft locking tools [3] . Tighten to 25 Nm.
- If camshaft locking tool cannot be fitted valve timing is incorrect.
- Remove blanking plug from upper sump.
- Fit crankshaft locking pin [4] . Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
- Remove tensioner(s) to ease timing chain(s) removal/installation.
- Push plunger into tensioner housing and insert locking pin [5] , [6] & [7] .
- Slacken central bolt of each LH cylinder head camshaft adjuster 1 turn [8] .
NOTE: Mark chain link and camshaft adjusters with paint before removal.
- Align camshafts.
- Fit camshaft locking tool to LH cylinder bank [3] .
- Fit camshaft locking tool bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm.
- Pre-tension chain using camshaft adjuster pre-tensioning tools [9] .
- Tighten bolt of each LH camshaft adjuster in two stages:
- Tighten LH inlet camshaft adjuster bolt to stage A: 60 Nm.
- Maintain pre-tension on LH inlet camshaft adjuster [9] .
- Tighten LH exhaust camshaft adjuster bolt to stage A: 60 Nm.
- Remove camshaft adjuster pre-tensioning tools [9] .
- Tighten bolt of each LH camshaft adjuster to stage B: 80 Nm + 90°.
- Repeat valve timing procedure for RH cylinder bank.
- Remove timing chain tensioner locking pins after repairs [7] .
NOTE: Central bolt of camshaft adjusters MUST only be used once.
- Remove crankshaft locking pin and camshaft locking tool [4] & [3] .
- Turn crankshaft 2 turns clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .
- Fit crankshaft locking pin [4] .
- Check valve timing.
- Remove crankshaft locking pin [4] .
- Refit blanking plug for upper sump.
NOTE: If timing chains are to be reused, mark LH and RH chains before removal to ensure they are refitted in their original positions.
